Firefighters from multiple departments responded to a residential structure fire on Cedar Avenue after an initial report of a garage fire developed into a second-alarm incident. Crews encountered fire extending into the upper portions of the residence, requiring multiple handlines, roof ventilation, and extensive overhaul operations.
On October 19, 2026, the New Windsor Fire Department was dispatched to 104 Cedar Avenue in New Windsor, New York, for a reported structure fire. New Windsor Car 2 arrived on scene, confirmed a working garage fire, and requested a second alarm through Orange County 911.
The additional alarm brought mutual-aid resources from the Newburgh, West Point, Vails Gate, and Cornwall Fire Departments. Firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions that had extended from the garage into the second floor and attic of the residence.
Crews placed two handlines into operation to attack the fire and prevent further extension. Firefighters from Newburgh positioned an aerial ladder to the roof to support ventilation operations while additional personnel continued fire suppression efforts.
Central Hudson was requested to respond for an electrical service shutdown, and the New Windsor Police Department secured the surrounding area to restrict access and support emergency operations. New Windsor EMS personnel were also on scene, along with Orange County Deputy Fire Coordinator 36-14.
As suppression efforts progressed, firefighters knocked down the main body of fire and transitioned into extensive overhaul operations. Crews worked to locate and extinguish remaining fire in areas affected by the extension into the upper floors and attic.
New Windsor Fire Inspectors responded to the scene, and the American Red Cross was notified to assist residents affected by the incident. During operations, the Good Will and Salisbury Mills Fire Departments provided standby coverage.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation at the time of the initial report. Information regarding injuries and the full extent of damage was not included in the original incident account.
