Members of the Independent Fire Company #1 were out early to provide a flag detail in honor of Sergeant Steve Sherman, a Spring Lake Heights resident who lost his life in service to the United States in 2005 while deployed in Iraq.

The tribute was part of the New Jersey Run for the Fallen, an annual event that honors and remembers service members from New Jersey who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Along the route, runners stop at personalized Hero Markers to recognize each fallen hero, ensuring their names and legacies are never forgotten.

Firefighters proudly displayed the American flag as runners passed, standing in solemn respect for Sgt. Sherman and all who have served.

The Independent Fire Company #1 continues its tradition of community service and remembrance, ensuring that the sacrifices of local heroes like Sgt. Sherman live on in the hearts of all who serve and support.
