Holbrook, NY - Rapid handline deployment and coordinated ventilation by the Holbrook Volunteer Fire Department contained an active kitchen fire inside a two-story home on Birchdale Drive Tuesday afternoon.
On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Holbrook volunteers were dispatched to a reported residential structure fire on Birchdale Drive. First-arriving Chief Apostol (32) confirmed active smoke showing from the exterior of a two-story private dwelling and located an active fire burning within the kitchen area.
Firefighters from Engine 1 rapidly stretched and charged an interior attack handline, advancing directly into the kitchen to knock down the seat of the fire. Simultaneous truck company operations focused on searching the living spaces for potential fire extension into the walls and ceiling voids, while secondary teams coordinated vertical and horizontal ventilation to clear toxic heat and smoke from the dwelling.
The coordinated attack brought the fire under control swiftly, preventing flames from spreading into the second floor or attic space. Holbrook units operated on scene for approximately one hour conducting overhaul and confirming the structure was safe before clearing the scene.
Responding department apparatus included Chief 32, Engines 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6, Truck 27, and Fire Police units 49 and 50.
