Garrison, NY - A major multi-agency response featuring high-capacity rural tanker shuttles brought a fully involved barn fire under control Thursday night, protecting neighboring exposures and preventing flames from extending into adjacent forest land along Old Albany Post Road.
At approximately 7:44 p.m. on October 8, 2026, the Garrison Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to 979 Old Albany Post Road for a reported barn fire. Arriving firefighters were met with heavy fire rolling through the structure, which was being operated as a workshop. Command quickly transmitted a first alarm and requested an immediate influx of mutual aid tankers to establish a sustained rural water supply.
Crews mounted an aggressive defensive and exposure-protection attack, setting up perimeter lines to keep the intense heat and blowing embers from catching surrounding woodland timber and nearby structures. The barn was confirmed to be unoccupied at the time of the fire, with no animals housed inside, and no injuries were reported among civilians or responding emergency personnel.
Garrison deployed a substantial fleet to the scene, including Chief 15-1-1, 1st Assistant Chief 15-1-2, Engine 15-2-2, Mini Attack Engine 15-2-1, Tanker 15-4-1, Rescue 15-6-1, Utility Truck 15-8-3, and Brush Truck 15-3-1. A coordinated network of mutual aid supported the suppression effort: North Highlands Engine Company No. 1 supplied an engine and tanker; Cold Spring Fire Company No. 1 provided an engine; the Village of Fishkill deployed an aerial ladder; Putnam Valley Fire Department staged a Fast Team and tanker; Dutchess Junction Fire Company delivered tanker support; and Continental Village sent a tanker to the scene while detailing an engine to backfill Garrison headquarters.
Medical standby was provided by the Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps, with scene coordination assisted by Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services Battalion 19 and County Car 2. All units completed extensive overhaul, extinguished residual hotspots, and officially cleared the scene by 10:58 p.m.
