Providence, R.I. — October 7 — Canteen 1, associated with the Special Signal Fire Association and known as the Providence Canteen, was called to assist with a second-alarm structure fire at 24 Bel Air Drive in Providence on October 7, 2026. The unit was sent to the scene at 3:30 p.m.to help the firefighters already working there.
The fire broke out at a residence on Bel Air Drive and required additional resources due to the second-alarm status.
As reported by WPRI, firefighters arrived at the home in the afternoon to deal with the blaze. The crews managed to bring the fire under control within approximately one hour, though the house suffered considerable damage. There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
Canteen 1 provided on-site support to the emergency personnel during the incident. The Providence Canteen, run by the Special Signal Fire Association, offered aid during fires and other emergencies. This included providing drinks, food, and assistance to help responders recover physically during long firefighting operations.
These services were vital in helping the crews deal with the physical stress of extended firefighting tasks while keeping their focus on fire suppression, cleanup, and ensuring safety at the scene. The association had a 24/7 operation with volunteers and responded wherever assistance was needed.
Based at 100 Minnesota Ave. in Warwick, the organization functions as a regional support hub for local fire departments and other emergency services. Its involvement in the Bel Air Drive incident demonstrated the important role these canteen units play in supporting personnel during active fires.
