Binghamton, NY - A keen-eyed bystander helped emergency personnel prevent serious commercial property damage Saturday morning after a commercial coffee roaster caught fire inside a business along State Street in downtown Binghamton.
At approximately 10:15 a.m. on October 10, 2026, Binghamton Fire Department Group C was dispatched to 178 State Street for a possible building fire. First-arriving crews observed smoke actively venting from a chimney at the rear of the structure.
Firefighters forced entry and rapidly traced the smoke source to an active fire burning within an interior commercial coffee roaster. Crews extinguished the appliance flames, disassembled and removed all charred roaster components from the occupancy, and deployed positive-pressure ventilation to clear residual smoke from the space.
Fire personnel also performed a thorough inspection of the chimney flue up through the roof to confirm the fire had not extended into structural voids.
Department officials praised the attentive civilian who promptly dialed 911 upon spotting the unusual smoke, reminding the public to report all suspected fire hazards immediately to emergency dispatchers.
