Deposit, NY - Emergency responders from the Deposit Fire Department and Eastern Broome Emergency Services were dispatched late Tuesday night following a high-speed vehicle collision involving a bear along State Route 17 in Broome County.
On October 6, 2026, rescue units returned to the vicinity of Mile Marker 270 on State Route 17—the scene of a separate collision earlier in the week—to mitigate an injury accident in the eastbound lanes near the Exit 82 on-ramp. Upon arrival, crews determined that a passenger vehicle traveling along the highway corridor had struck a bear directly in the roadway.
One occupant inside the vehicle sustained injuries during the impact and was treated by medical personnel from Eastern Broome Ambulance 8422.
To ensure scene safety and allow emergency crews to operate safely in the travel lanes, responders implemented a temporary closure of two eastbound lanes near the on-ramp, diverting traffic around the disabled vehicle and debris field.
Deposit Fire Department operated on scene with Squad 22-1, Rescue 22, and Midi-Pumper 22 alongside EMS units until the patient was stabilized and the roadway was cleared of all hazards.
