Kinderhook, NY - An automobile crashed over a roadside barrier along State Route 9H on Sunday night, triggering an hours-long recovery operation and prompting an urgent public safety reminder from emergency crews regarding driver behavior in Columbia County.
On October 4, 2026, the Kinderhook Fire Company (Palmer Engine & Hose Company 1), Valatie Rescue, and the New York State Police were dispatched to a reported auto accident with personal injury (AAPI) along NYS Route 9H, situated just north of the Kinderhook Elks Lodge. Responding units arrived to discover that a passenger vehicle had careened over the highway guardrail, coming to rest off the roadway.
Valatie Rescue personnel evaluated and treated the vehicle's operator on the scene. Emergency crews maintained lane closures and hazard mitigation for several hours while commercial heavy-wrecker services worked to hoist and extract the vehicle back over the embankment.
During the prolonged operation, responders faced substantial danger from passing motorists who repeatedly failed to decelerate while navigating through the active emergency perimeter. The close calls prompted department officials to issue a direct warning reminding drivers of New York's "Move Over" law, urging motorists to stay vigilant, anticipate altered traffic patterns, yield right-of-way, and significantly slow down to protect emergency personnel working along high-speed corridors.
