Milford, CT - At approximately 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday 1st October , Squad 1 responded to a report of a chemical odor inside a residence on Overton Avenue. Upon arrival, the crew quickly identified the area as hazardous through metering and ensured the home was safely evacuated. The Milford Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team was activated, and crews, working in conjunction with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP), began developing an action plan.

The homeowner reported that the odor began after he accidentally dropped an old refrigerator while moving it in the basement. Hazardous Materials Technicians, wearing Level A protective suits, made entry into the residence. The refrigerator’s compressor was removed and brought outside for additional metering. Testing determined the released refrigerant to be sulfur dioxide—a colorless gas heavier than air that can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat and may lead to difficulty breathing or bronchitis.

The homeowners were medically evaluated at the scene but did not require further medical care. As a precaution, surrounding homes were advised to shelter in place, close all windows and doors, turn off HVAC systems, and remain indoors. These notifications were carried out with assistance from the Milford Police Department.

The affected home was deemed unsafe for occupancy for the remainder of the night, and the American Red Cross was notified to assist the residents. After completing decontamination and medical monitoring, the Milford Fire Department’s HazMat team and all other responding units cleared the scene.

Incidents such as this highlight the wide range of hazards fire departments face daily. Through continuous training and dedication, Milford Fire Department members remain committed to protecting their community.
