Mashpee, Mass. — September 18 —  The Mashpee Fire Department formally put Marine 1, their first saltwater response vessel, into service. In terms of enhancing emergency response on the community's waterways, the new asset is a significant advancement. The landing craft-style vessel is ideal for rescues and emergencies on Popponnesset Bay, Waquoit Bay, Mashpee's south-facing beaches, and parts of Nantucket Sound because it is built to function in shallow and open waters.

As the department heads into the colder months, firefighters will continue joint training with the Harbormaster, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Department of Environmental Protection, ensuring readiness for a range of waterborne incidents.
