— September 23, 2026 — FDNY units arrived around 7:45 a.m. A reported fire broke out at a six-story apartment building located at 1484 Montgomery Avenue in the Bronx on Wednesday.
When firefighters arrived, they found severe fire conditions and immediately launched an interior attack. The fire extended into a neighboring apartment, two floors above the initial fire zone, as well as into the cockloftthe space between the top-floor ceiling and the roof.
One person was declared dead at the scene. Six civilians were hurt, one of whom sustained serious injuries. Four firefighters also suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
Around 46 FDNY fire and EMS units, totaling about 140 personnel, responded to the two-alarm fire. Control over the incident was regained just before 10 a.m. FDNY Fire Marshals continued to investigate the cause of the fire.
The FDNY Bureau of Fire Prevention also issued multiple summonses amounting to $4,000 and had a vehicle removed after discovering it was blocking a fire hydrant in front of the building. FDNY warned the public that vehicles obstructing hydrants can hinder firefighters’ ability to secure water during emergencies and are therefore banned.
Vehicles must not be parked in front of a fire hydrant.
