22 September 2025 - Fire crews were dispatched to Granby for an out-of-control grass fire that was rapidly approaching the woodline. Due to the distance of the response and the drought-stricken fuel conditions, East Burke C1 requested Concord Fire & Rescue for mutual aid.
Within minutes, St. Johnsbury Emergency Dispatch reported that the fire had reached the woods, with trees catching fire and falling—indicating the development of a canopy fire. With constant communication from dispatch providing updates, additional resources were requested before arrival, including Calex Ambulance Service, West Burke Fire, Lunenburg, and Dalton. Calex also requested the Waterford Rehab trailer for support.
Upon arrival, crews established firelines and worked through thick wooded areas in an attempt to contain and extinguish the fire. Due to the labor-intensive operations and the distance into the woods, C1 also requested assistance from Lyndonville Fire Department and Waterford Fire for additional personnel equipped with hand tools.
The fire was eventually brought under control and extinguished. The last units cleared the scene just before sunset, at which point the incident was turned over to the Vermont Forest & Parks Wildfire Division. That agency will continue monitoring and extinguishment efforts in the coming days.
Sutton Volunteer Fire Department, St. Johnsbury Fire Department, and Monroe Fire Department provided area coverage during the incident.
In total, the fire reached the equivalent of a third alarm, with approximately 50 firefighters and 19 pieces of apparatus operating on scene. The fire remains under investigation by the town fire warden, and no further information is available at this time.
