Sept. 13, 2025 — Crews from Gorham Fire and EMS and Gorham Police managed a busy morning on Saturday, balancing multiple calls including traffic control for the Call to Duty 10K when a report came in of a hiker in distress on Pine Mountain.
The initial call described the patient as unconscious and not breathing, located more than 1,000 feet up a hiking trail. A response was immediately initiated, with Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue also called to assist with the carry-out.
Before rescuers arrived, fellow hikers acted quickly—retrieving an AED from the Horton Center and performing CPR. Their lifesaving actions restored a pulse to the patient by the time fire and EMS crews reached the scene.
Due to the patient’s critical condition, Maine LifeFlight was requested for air transport. With assistance from Shelburne Fire Department, a landing zone was set up at the Gorham Airport. The patient was flown to a higher-level care facility, responsive upon departure thanks to the combined efforts of bystanders and emergency personnel.
“This successful outcome highlights the importance of teamwork — from the hikers who acted without hesitation, to the first responders and LifeFlight crew,” officials noted.
