Sept. 29, 2025 — The Mendon Fire Department received multiple calls within an hour on Monday reporting a strong odor of natural gas across several neighborhoods, including Bellingham Street, Mary Drive, Talbot Farm Drive, Bates Street, Edward Road, Joseph Road, and Cape Road.

Fire crews promptly investigated and determined that the likely cause was a subcontractor working on the Algonquin transmission lines. Normally, the department is notified of such work in advance so that information can be relayed to the public. In this case, because the work was performed by a subcontractor, the fire department had not been informed.

Officials said the odor should dissipate shortly, but reminded residents to remain vigilant.

“If at any point you smell an odor inside your home or you develop any symptoms, you are encouraged to call 911,” the department emphasized.
