Sept. 8, 2025 — A man from New York who sustained serious leg injuries after a fall in a remote section of Long Pond Township, just east of Jackman, was rescued Monday through a helicopter airlift by the Maine Forest Service.

The injured man was attended to by his wife and friends until emergency responders arrived. Jackman–Moose River Fire & Rescue Department (JMRF&RD) EMTs and firefighters, joined by Maine Game Wardens, U.S. Border Patrol Agents, and a North East Mobile Health Service paramedic, hiked over extremely rough terrain to reach the patient.

Due to the difficulty of carrying the patient out by foot, JMRF&RD requested the Maine Forest Service deploy a “short haul” rescue, a technique in which a patient is suspended beneath a helicopter and flown to safety. The patient was airlifted from the backcountry to a JMRF&RD ambulance staged in a gravel pit along Bean Brook East Road in Parlin Pond Township.

Shortly after the transfer, a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter arrived and transported the man to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment.

The Maine Warden Service is investigating the incident and will release the man’s name and further details about his injuries.

Agencies involved in the rescue included:

  • Maine Forest Service Rangers
  • Jackman–Moose River Fire & Rescue Department
  • Maine Warden Service / Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife
  • U.S. Border Patrol (Houlton Sector)
  • North East Mobile Health Services
  • LifeFlight of Maine
  • Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center
