Sept. 28, 2025 — Members of the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company joined fire departments from across the state at the 23rd Annual Connecticut State Firefighters Memorial Service on Sunday.

This year, five firefighters who died in the line of duty were added to the memorial wall, including two from Newtown: Botsford Fire Assistant Chief Pete Blomberg and Hawleyville Firefighter Lewis Durgy.

Sandy Hook firefighters were honored to present the colors at the ceremony, which also saw attendance from members of Botsford Fire, Hawleyville Fire, and Dodgingtown Fire.

In addition to honoring this year’s inductees, Sandy Hook members visited the name of their late Chief Bill Halstead, whose service and leadership remain a source of pride for the department.

The memorial wall stands as a lasting tribute to Connecticut firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice, ensuring their bravery and service are never forgotten.
