Sept. 15, 2025 — Last week, the Nichols Fire Department conducted a drafting drill at Pinewood Lake, sharpening skills that are essential for firefighting in areas without hydrants.
Drafting is the process of drawing water from a static source, such as a lake or pond, and using it to supply trucks and hose lines. This technique ensures firefighters can maintain a steady and reliable water flow during emergencies, even when hydrants are unavailable.
Department officials emphasized the importance of regular training: “In areas without hydrants, firefighters must rely on natural water sources. Drafting ensures we’re always ready to provide water where it’s needed.”
