Pen Hills, PA - Firefighters from Penn Hills and the City of Pittsburgh teamed up Wednesday evening to combat a working structural fire along Frankstown Road, successfully extinguishing the blaze and rescuing two family pets despite facing a catastrophic fire hydrant failure.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. on September 30, 2026, Allegheny County 911 struck Incident 949, dispatching Stations 225, 221, 227, 222, 223, and 285 to the 8800 block of Frankstown Road. Because early 911 calls placed the dwelling right along the municipal border of Penn Hills and Pittsburgh, units from both the Penn Hills Fire Department and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire responded to the scene.

Pittsburgh Engine 17 and Penn Hills Truck 227 arrived to find heavy smoke issuing from the second floor. Engine 17 immediately deployed interior attack lines while Truck 227 laddered the exterior, and Engine 227 established a dedicated supply line to Engine 17.

Interior crews located the seat of the fire inside a second-floor bedroom, where flames had already breached and extended into the structural attic. Pittsburgh Truck 8 executed vertical ventilation on the roof, while Engine 285 and additional city companies conducted primary and secondary searches throughout the building.

Responders confirmed no residents were trapped inside, but located two family dogs and brought them out safely to the exterior. Despite an unexpected catastrophic mechanical failure of the primary municipal fire hydrant, operating crews adapted quickly to maintain water flow and bring the fire under control.

The address was confirmed to be located within Penn Hills municipality, and the Penn Hills Fire Marshal responded to investigate, ruling the origin of the fire to be electrical. The American Red Cross was activated and is providing emergency temporary assistance to the displaced residents.
