Bar Harbor, ME - In the whole week Bar Harbor firefighters practiced “rural hitch” operations, a method used to supply water to a fire when hydrants are not available. In this approach, the first arriving engines share their onboard tank water until they can be supported by tankers shuttling between the fire scene and a designated fill site. The “rural hitch” refers to the gated valve to which the tankers connect, allowing two tankers to hook up simultaneously while keeping the supply hose charged.
