Hackensack Crews Responded to Bus and Pedestrian Crash

Hackensack, N.J. — September 8 — The City of Hackensack Fire Department arrived at approximately 6:30 p.m.at the intersection of State Street and Mercer Street to handle a vehicle accident involving a bus and two pedestrians.

One of the pedestrians was trapped with a leg stuck underneath a wheel of the bus and was in severe pain.

Since Fire Headquarters was just a short distance away from the scene, Deputy 3, Engine 4, and Rescue 1 responded quickly to the incident.

Firefighters used a Paratech MaxiForce airbag to lift the bus and then secured it before carefully removing the injured pedestrian. The operation required close coordination to ensure the vehicle remained stable while the firefighters worked around the patient.

Several off-duty Hackensack firefighters were in the area and helped after arriving at headquarters for a union meeting.

A Hackensack fire dispatcher, who was starting their shift, also joined the response.Hackensack Police Department officers were on site to assist.

NJ Transit personnel were called in because the incident involved a transit bus.

Hackensack University Medical Center’s ALS and BLS crews provided medical care for the patient.

This incident highlighted the importance of having trained personnel, rescue equipment, and emergency medical services working together during a complex rescue.

The department’s Rescue 1 unit is equipped with specialized tools used for vehicle extrications and other emergency operations.

The scene was cleared after the trapped pedestrian was safely removed and handed over to medical personnel.
