Lyndhurst, N.J. — September 22 —As cooler weather encourages more backyard gatherings, the Lyndhurst Fire Department released seasonal guidance for the safe use of outdoor fire pits and similar devices. The reminders, according to officials, are intended to lower the chance of fires and prevent smoke conditions that could annoy neighbors. The department states that only manufactured containers made specifically for recreational fires, like Chimineas or screened outdoor fireplaces, are permitted. These devices should never be placed on decks and must be at least 15 feet away from buildings or decks. Fuel can only be made from dry wood. Fires must be extinguished right away if they burn too hot or emit smoke that irritates nearby residents. The purpose of these regulations, according to fire prevention staff, is to ensure that outdoor burning is both safe and considerate of the community. They are based on state and local codes. In the event of an emergency, residents can dial 9-1-1 or call the Lyndhurst Police Department at 201-939-2900 if they have concerns about smoke or dangerous conditions.
