Aggressive Interior Attack Stops Rapid Fire Spread at Jackson Street Apartment Complex

Oakland, NJ - A fast and coordinated response by Oakland firefighters prevented catastrophic damage and widespread displacement early Sunday morning after a second-floor unit in a large apartment complex became fully involved in fire.

Just before 6:00 a.m. on September 13, emergency dispatchers alerted the Oakland Fire Department to a reported structure fire in the 1500 block of Jackson Street. First-alarm companies arrived on scene within three minutes of the call to find heavy fire consuming an apartment on the second floor of a multi-story residential complex.

Engine and truck crews mounted an aggressive interior attack while simultaneously guiding residents of neighboring units to safety through the complex's hallways. Firefighters successfully knocked down the main body of fire in less than ten minutes and officially brought the incident under control within 15 minutes of the initial 911 alert, halting lateral fire spread to surrounding apartments.

The primary fire unit was heavily damaged, with vertical heat damage extending to the apartment directly overhead and smoke logging second-floor corridors. One occupant from the involved unit was treated and transported by ambulance to a local hospital for minor burn injuries; no other civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

A major structural deployment operated on scene, including Engines 1, 2, 10, 12, and 15, Trucks 1 and 4, Battalions 2 and 4, and an OFD Fire Investigator. The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
