New Bedford, MA - The New Bedford Fire Department held an ammonia response drill, beginning with a tour of the ammonia refrigeration systems at both NORPEL facilities on Fish Island. During the visit, NORPEL conducted evacuation drills, sparking discussions aimed at improving safety protocols throughout the facility and enhancing the fire department’s response to potential incidents.
Following the facility tour, firefighters practiced using detection equipment and conducted rescues in a simulated ammonia environment. Training with this specialized equipment prepares firefighters to safely enter facilities during ammonia incidents and rescue downed individuals before the arrival of the State Hazmat Team.
The drill was planned and coordinated by Hazardous Materials Coordinator Travis Rebello. The department thanked all members who participated in the training and NORPEL staff for their collaboration.
