Engine 9 Out of Service During Response; Crews Forced to Use Reserve Apparatus

Fall River, MA - Members from Engine 9 were responding to a reported fire (still alarm) on Johnson Street when the apparatus failed to start. The engine was subsequently towed to the shop for repairs.
Crews were forced to move into the department’s reserve engine, a 1997 model approaching 30 years in service. Breakdowns like this have become an increasingly common challenge across the fleet.
A new Engine 9 and Ladder 4 have been ordered, but delivery is still approximately a year away. With build times now stretching three to four years and no additional apparatus currently in the queue, maintaining reliable equipment continues to be a significant challenge for department members.
