Attleboro, MA - The Attleboro Fire Department rescued a swan entangled in fishing line at Cranberry Pond on Wednesday morning. On September 17, at approximately 8:52 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the area of Leedham Street following a report of an animal in distress. Upon arrival, crews found the swan about 100 feet from shore, its body and legs caught in fishing line. Firefighters donned water rescue suits and waded into the pond. Although the swan resisted efforts to free it, the firefighters were able to release it, and it quickly swam away.
“This was a good opportunity for our members to take the training they receive and apply it in the real world in a less time-sensitive situation,” said District Chief Mike Maitland. “When the day comes that our firefighters need to conduct a water rescue involving a person, they will be better prepared.”
Animal Control also responded to assist on the scene. Crews cleared the area at approximately 9:29 a.m.
