Emergency Evacuation Ordered as Whiting Crews Vent Dangerous Propane Leak

Whitting, NJ - Firefighters ordered an immediate emergency evacuation Thursday night after discovering highly explosive concentrations of propane gas inside a residence in the Beckerville section.

At approximately 8:57 p.m. on September 17, Station 33 (Whiting Fire Company) was dispatched to a home following reports of a strong odor of gas. Deputy Chief 3310 arrived on the scene shortly after the initial call and confirmed an active propane leak within the dwelling.

Engine 3301, Tanker 3318, and Engine 3311 responded to the incident to assist with hazard mitigation. Utilizing atmospheric gas meters, crews took interior readings and detected propane concentrations that had already reached the explosive limit. Firefighters immediately evacuated the residents from the home to prevent a catastrophic ignition.

Entry teams successfully isolated the gas supply, locating and securing the active source of the leak at a kitchen stove. Crews then deployed mechanical fans to systematically ventilate the structure, conducting continuous atmospheric monitoring until all explosive gases were cleared and safe air quality levels were fully restored.
