Berkeley Heights Crews Handled Two-Vehicle Crash on Mountain Avenue

Berkeley Heights, N.J. — September 2 — The Berkeley Heights Fire Department responded late Wednesday night to a two-vehicle motor vehicle accident that occurred on Mountain Avenue near Sycamore Avenue. A fallen tree was also involved in the incident.

Rescue 1 and Engine 4 were sent to the scene.

Firefighters located the vehicles involved in the collision and coordinated with emergency medical personnel who were present. Berkeley Heights firefighters provided medical care to the patients until Union County EMS arrived to take over the treatment.

Fire crews also took steps to secure the electrical power in one of the vehicles. This action helped eliminate a possible electrical hazard and reduced the chance of a short circuit that could have resulted in a vehicle fire.

The response highlighted the level of coordination needed during vehicle crashes that include additional risks like fallen trees and damaged electrical systems. Firefighters had to balance providing patient care with ensuring the safety of the vehicles and the surrounding area for both responders and EMS personnel.

The Berkeley Heights Volunteer Fire Department was based at 411 Hamilton Avenue and functioned as part of the township’s emergency services system. The township also identified the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad at 378 Snyder Avenue as a separate emergency service agency.

The incident that occurred on September 2 was managed by fire and EMS personnel as they worked to provide medical care and control the hazards at the crash scene.
