Fair Lawn Firefighters Sharpen Water Rescue Skills for National Preparedness Month
September marks National Preparedness Month, a time when communities are encouraged to review their emergency and disaster plans. In Fair Lawn, where flooding has become more frequent over the past decade, the Fire Department has strengthened its ability to respond to flash floods and tropical storms.
The department now operates a flat-bottom motorboat, and each of the four fire companies is equipped with an inflatable raft, wetsuits, personal flotation devices, and rescue rings to aid in surface water rescues.
This past Tuesday, all four fire companies joined the Fair Lawn Rescue Squad for a training exercise at Memorial Pool. More than 50 members participated, practicing essential water rescue skills such as swimming with flotation devices, tossing rescue rings and throw bags, searching for submerged objects, and deploying inflatable boats.
The drill underscored the department’s ongoing commitment to preparedness and readiness in the face of severe weather.
