Danvers Engine 3 Assisted at Four-Alarm Rockport Fire

Rockport, MA — September 19 — Danvers Fire Department Engine 3 was involved in Rockport as part of a mutual aid effort for a four-alarm fire at 19 Broadway Avenue. Rockport firefighters were sent out just before 10 a.m. after a strong smell of gas was reported from a mixed-use building. When the crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and an active fire. Four alarms were raised to bring in more firefighters and equipment to the scene.

Danvers was one of several North Shore fire departments that helped during the incident.

Firefighters from Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Essex, Wenham, Hamilton, Middleton, Ipswich, Peabody, and Lynn also responded, along with Rehab 5.

Firefighters worked for several hours until the fire was controlled around 1 p.m.

National Grid was called to turn off the electricity while the crews kept working.No injuries were reported, although two families and several businesses had to leave the building.

The response showed how important mutual aid is during long-lasting emergencies.

Nearby departments provided extra staff and tools, while Rockport crews handled the situation within their community.

Later, the Rockport Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, which is part of the State Fire Marshal’s Office, conducted an investigation into the fire.
