This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

In the previous week, members of Whiting Fire participated in a vehicle stabilization and extrication training exercise. The scenario simulated a 2500 SUV resting on top of a small two-door car, with entrapment of both the “driver” and “front passenger.” In addition, the “driver” had an upper extremity pinned by the SUV’s frame.

To stabilize both vehicles, members utilized Paratech struts along with conventional cribbing. Crews then performed a roof removal on the car to extricate the mock passenger, followed by a lifting operation of the SUV to free the pinned mock driver.

The lifting portion of the training was repeated several times using various methods, including:

  1. Spreader lift
  2. Controlled roll with a winch
  3. Airbag review

Each technique incorporated the use of Paratech struts, which were “chased” with air to lock in progress. Redundant cribbing was also applied to maximize safety.

Because every motor vehicle accident presents unique challenges, Whiting Fire consistently trains on complex scenarios to remain prepared for the many variables that can arise in the field.

The Department is paying a special thanks to NJ Scrap Metal and Recycling Center in Plumsted for providing the training site.
