Cologne, N.J. — September 21— On Sunday, the Cologne Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched for its fourth call of the day, a Landing Zone (LZ) assignment connected to a motor vehicle accident on the Atlantic City Expressway. The assignment, listed as call #346 for the year, required firefighters to establish and secure a landing area for an incoming medical helicopter.
According to Atlantic County dispatch records, the call was received in the early afternoon after reports of a multi-vehicle crash along the Expressway. Emergency medical services on scene determined that a patient’s injuries warranted rapid air transport to a regional trauma center. Cologne firefighters were tasked with preparing a safe LZ near the highway to accommodate the responding medevac helicopter.
Firefighters from Cologne worked alongside local law-enforcement officers and EMS crews to clear and secure the designated area. They ensured that the landing zone was free of debris and maintained safe perimeter control during the helicopter’s approach and departure. Once the patient was transferred to the flight crew, fire units remained on scene until the medevac departed.
