Malfunctioning Refrigerator Sparks First-Floor Kitchen Fire on Palm Street in Springfield

Springfield, MA - A malfunctioning kitchen appliance sparked a structure fire on Palm Street late Tuesday morning, displacing nine residents before firefighters brought the flames under control.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on September 8, Springfield Fire and Emergency Services units were dispatched to 25 Palm Street following reports of heavy smoke inside the building. First-arriving companies entered the residence to locate the source and discovered an active fire burning in a first-floor kitchen.

Firefighters advanced an attack line to quickly knock down the blaze and prevent it from spreading beyond the kitchen area and extending into upper levels of the home. Crews also performed ventilation to eject toxic smoke and thermal gases from the dwelling. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

Although the fire was contained to the first floor, interior damage left the home temporarily uninhabitable, displacing a total of nine residents. The American Red Cross was contacted and arrived to provide emergency housing, clothing, and relocation assistance to the affected family members.

Investigators from the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad responded to determine the fire's origin, concluding following an on-scene examination that the blaze was accidental, ignited by an electrical malfunction within a residential refrigerator.
