Mutual-Aid Crews Assisted Hiker on Spruce Mountain

Plainfield, VT — September 7 — East Montpelier Fire Department personnel helped Plainfield Fire & Rescue deal with a hiker who was having a medical issue on the Spruce Mountain Trail within L.R.Jones State Forest.
Because the area is far from any main roads, Barre Town Fire Department was called in for extra help and their off-road rescue skills.
East Montpelier Rescue 3 and Utility 1 arrived, bringing along their UTV, Advanced Life Support gear, and eight team members.
The hiker was found with the help of a Good Samaritan who led the responders to his location on the trail.
The man had only a small injury and didn’t need a major medical transport.
The responders walked the hiker about a quarter of a mile to a waiting UTV.
The vehicle then took him the rest of the way to the trailhead, where he was safely handed over.
The whole event took around 90 minutes to complete.
L.R. Jones State Forest spans 642 acres and is known for the Spruce Mountain Trail. This trail runs about 2.2 miles in each direction to the top of Spruce Mountain, which is 3,037 feet high. The higher part of the trail is steeper and more rocky, which makes it harder for emergency teams to reach.
