SPRING TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Friday, Sept. 12) — Firefighters extricated a driver Friday morning after a box truck struck the rear of a tractor-trailer on Route 222 southbound, officials said.

Township of Spring Fire Rescue Services, Wyomissing Fire Department and Western Berks EMS were dispatched to the crash between Broadcasting Road and the southbound ramp. Responders confirmed heavy entrapment in the box truck.

Crews stabilized the vehicle and used glass cutters, hydraulic tools and reciprocating saws to reach the trapped occupant. EMS initiated care once access was made, and firefighters assisted with boarding and transferring the patient for transport.

The tractor-trailer’s load of perishable food remained intact with no hazards reported. Fire police from multiple departments managed traffic during the operation, which caused major delays on Route 222.

Crews later cleared debris and fluids before returning to service. Police kept the roadway closed for investigation after fire units were released.
