Jaws of Life Deployed Outside 4th Precinct: Smithtown Firefighters Cut Trapped Driver Free

Smithtown, NY - Emergency crews deployed hydraulic extrication tools to free an injured motorist and initiated rapid trauma care for multiple patients—including one in critical condition—following a violent two-vehicle collision early Thursday morning directly outside the Suffolk County Police Department's 4th Precinct.

At approximately 6:18 a.m. on September 17, Smithtown Fire Rescue Communications dispatched the Smithtown Fire Department alongside emergency medical services to the intersection of Veterans Memorial Highway and North Drive for a reported motor vehicle collision involving entrapment.

First-arriving crews encountered a heavily damaged two-car accident occupying the roadway, with one occupant heavily pinned within the wreckage. Under the operational direction of Assistant Chief Palazzo, firefighters immediately stabilized the unstable vehicle and deployed hydraulic spreaders and cutters to execute a driver's-side door removal, freeing the trapped patient in a coordinated extraction.

Paramedics and emergency medical technicians established triage sectors to treat several individuals hurt in the impact, quickly identifying one patient in critical condition requiring rapid advanced life support intervention.
