Rock Hill Firefighters Secure Scene of Destructive Dump Truck Rollover in Thompson

Rock Hill, NY - A commercial dump truck carrying a heavy payload of dirt and rock overturned on the Bridgeville Bridge late Wednesday morning, resulting in extensive damage to the bridge's infrastructure and prompting an extended closure of the roadway in eastern Sullivan County.

At approximately 11:20 a.m. on September 16, the Rock Hill Fire Department was dispatched to Bridgeville Road following reports of a heavy-vehicle rollover atop the bridge. Arriving emergency units discovered the overturned commercial vehicle occupying the roadway with its spilled aggregate load and noted substantial impact damage along both sides of the bridge's guard structures.

Despite the force of the collision, the vehicle's operator managed to self-extricate from the wreckage prior to the arrival of first responders, eliminating the need for hydraulic extrication operations. Medical personnel from the Rock Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps evaluated the driver on scene, while firefighters established safety zones, contained fluid hazards, and secured the unstable heavy machinery.

A large multi-agency contingency was assembled to handle scene management, structural assessment, and vehicle recovery. The Sullivan County Department of Public Works and the Town of Thompson Highway Department mobilized crews to assess structural impacts and coordinate repairs, while the New York State Police oversaw traffic enforcement and the accident investigation alongside Prestige Towing & Recovery for heavy-duty vehicle extraction.

Although Rock Hill fire apparatus returned to service following scene stabilization, transportation and emergency officials kept the Bridgeville Bridge closed to all traffic for several hours to facilitate thorough roadway clearing, structural inspections, and complex vehicle recovery efforts.
