On September 13th at about 1:30 PM, while a fire with Haz-Mat was being fought on the other side of the city, units were dispatched to 286 Wabash Ave for a reported structure fire. First arriving companies found a 1 ½ story frame dwelling heavily involved with reports of a trapped resident. A second alarm was transmitted. An elderly woman was located outside the structure and was transported to Saint Joe’s Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. With both fires draining the city of fire apparatus, multiple mutual aid units were sent for coverage.
Operations went defensive due to the heavy fire conditions and the electrical service down and arcing in the front yard. With no immediate exposure buildings, the heavy visible fire was knocked down quickly by Ladder 1’s tower and multiple hand lines. Members were able to re-enter for overhaul in less than a half hour. No additional injuries were reported.
