Occupant Escapes Third Floor During Sandy Creek Fire

LACONA, NY — Firefighters operated for nearly six hours at an early-morning house fire on Wheat Hill Drive in the Town of Sandy Creek.

Lacona Fire Department and automatic mutual-aid companies were dispatched at approximately 2:47 a.m. on September 7 for a reported occupant trapped on the third floor. Arriving crews encountered a heavily involved three-story residence, prompting a second-alarm response. The resident escaped by jumping from a third-story window and was transported to a Syracuse-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Crews operated defensively using master streams and handlines. With no hydrants available, firefighters established a tanker shuttle and portable water supply operation that also supplied an aerial from Pulaski Fire Department. An excavator was later brought in to assist with overhaul following structural collapse. Lacona firefighters remained on scene until approximately 8:43 a.m. The origin and cause of the fire remained under investigation.
