Providence Canteen Responded to North Stonington Fire

North Stonington, CT — September 6 — Canteen 1 from the Special Signal Fire Association, also known as the Providence Canteen, responded to an incident at 151 Murphy Road in North Stonington, where a working fire was reported. The canteen unit was dispatched from Warwick, Rhode Island, to assist firefighters and other emergency personnel on the scene. During the incident, the canteen provided essential rehabilitation and support services to the responders.

The North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company, along with other assisting departments, worked at the structure fire.

A report following the incident indicated that upon the arrival of the first officer, the structure was already heavily involved in the fire. Firefighters used multiple hose lines during the operation, and parts of the structure collapsed as a result of the blaze.

The Providence Canteen is operated by the Special Signal Fire Association, an all-volunteer organization that has provided food, drinks, and rehabilitation support to emergency responders for many years.

This organization was established in 1968 after local fire supporters recognized the need for refreshments during long fireground operations.

In recent responses, Canteen units have been involved in mutual-aid assignments across Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.

These units continue to support fire crews by providing hydration, refreshments, and other necessary resources while the firefighters focus on fire suppression and overhaul efforts.
