Hopewell, NJ — September 11 — A steel relic that was rescued from the World Trade Center was carried to Hopewell Borough Hall on morning of September 11 by the Hopewell Fire Department, Hopewell Township Emergency Medical Unit, and other municipal departments. For the upcoming year, the relic will be on display there.
For the past year, the relic has been on exhibit at the Mercer County Library's Hopewell Branch. It was led in a procession to Borough Hall today down Broad Street by firefighters and emergency medical personnel. It was relocated to Borough Hall's second floor, where it would be available during regular business hours.
Michael Chipowsky, retired chief and chairman of the Hopewell Valley 9/11 and Emergency Services Memorial Committee, began the dedication event by going over the chronology of the September 11, 2001 attacks, which killed almost 3,000 people. According to him, the steel artifact was donated to the community in the years after the cleanup and originated from the wreckage.
The display is part of ongoing efforts to remember those who died in the 9/11 attacks. The rotating location of this artifact among sites in Hopewell Valley ensures continued public visibility and opportunity for emergency services personnel and the general public to reflect.
