KNOWLTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sept. 15, 2025) — Two tractor-trailers collided late Monday on Interstate 80 westbound, spilling a load of M&M candy across the roadway and shutting traffic near the 2-mile marker, officials said.
The crash was reported at 10:17 p.m. when a westbound tractor-trailer rear-ended a parked truck on the shoulder near the 2.4 mile marker, according to Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company #1. The impact tore open both box trailers, scattering cargo and prompting an initial fire dispatch.
Fire crews responded with multiple engines, a rescue unit, and a tanker, along with Atlantic EMS. New Jersey State Police closed the westbound lanes until both truck operators were evaluated by EMS; neither required hospital transport.
New Jersey DOT assisted with detours and cleanup as the highway remained closed into the night. Fire crews cleared the scene shortly after midnight.
