New Bedford Firefighters Conducted Difficult Route 140 Rescue

New Bedford, MA — September 13 — New Bedford Fire Department crews responded to a severe motor vehicle crash near the Kings Highway ramp leading onto Route 140 North, just before midnight. The vehicle had left the road and traveled approximately 50 yards into a wooded area. Engine Company 9 and Ladder Company 4 faced challenges such as thick underbrush, uneven ground, and a severely damaged vehicle while approaching the crash site.
Firefighters used chainsaws to clear the vegetation and create a safe path to the vehicle.
Once they reached the driver, they utilized hydraulic rescue tools, commonly referred to as the Jaws of Life, to remove him from the car. The male driver was successfully extricated and was found to have injuries that were not life-threatening.New Bedford EMS provided initial care and transported the individual to St.Luke's Hospital.Massachusetts State Police also arrived at the scene and offered assistance.
The situation required close coordination between fire, emergency medical services, and law enforcement personnel.
Firefighters first established access through the wooded area before proceeding with the rescue operation.
