Early Detection Averts Disaster: Fort Ann Firefighters Contain Basement Smoke Incident on West Road

FORT ANN, NY — Volunteer firefighters responded to a first-alarm basement smoke condition Wednesday morning on West Road, isolating an overheated mechanical appliance and preventing what could have escalated into a major structural fire.

Shortly after 9:00 a.m. on August 26, the Fort Ann Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched alongside mutual aid partners and emergency medical services following reports of an active basement fire with smoke in the 10 block of West Road.

Fort Ann units deployed with Engine Rescue 265, Engine Tanker 262, and Brush 263, backed by a strong turnout of volunteer manpower. Firefighters initiated interior access and discovered moderate smoke filling the basement area. A systematic search and thermal inspection quickly traced the source of the condition to a severely burned-out water pump, eliminating the threat before flames could ignite adjacent structural framework.

Department leadership praised the homeowner for recognizing the signs of an internal hazard, immediately exiting the premises, and placing a 911 call rather than attempting to investigate alone.

Officials also extended recognition to the dispatchers of the Washington County Department of Public Safety for their swift handling of the call and rapid alerting of resources, as well as the assisting mutual aid fire companies and EMS units on scene. The incident was declared fully under control, and all units cleared the scene shortly after ventilating the space and securing the electrical hazard.
