Aggressive Attack and Primary Search: Varna and First Alarm Partners Stop Goss Street Blaze

Ithaca, NY - Firefighters executed an aggressive, synchronized interior attack and search operation Friday afternoon, locating and fully extinguishing an active residential fire within ten minutes of arrival on Goss Street.

At approximately 1:53 p.m. (1353 hours) on Friday, September 4, the Tompkins County 911 Center dispatched the Varna Volunteer Fire Company alongside first-alarm mutual aid agencies following a third-party report of a possible structural fire at a neighboring residence.

Initial visual indicators showed no immediate confirmation from the exterior until Firefighter Rizzo completed a formal 360-degree size-up of the property, confirming an active working fire inside the residence. Interior attack teams deployed handlines while concurrently executing a rapid primary search, confirming that no occupants were trapped within the building. Through decisive fireground coordination, suppression crews knocked down and completely extinguished the flames within ten minutes of on-scene operations.

Command was subsequently transferred to Chief Parker of the W.B. Strong Fire Company (Freeville) as additional mutual aid units arrived on location. Mutual aid suppression and support personnel were provided by the W.B. Strong Fire Company, Neptune Hose Company (Dryden), and the Cayuga Heights Fire Department.

Additional scene management, utility isolation, and emergency support were handled by the New York State Police, New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control (State Fire), and the Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response. The origin and cause of the fire remain under active investigation.
