FDNY Battles Two-Alarm Fire at Metropolitan Avenue Warehouse

A fire involving several trucks extended into a commercial building in Queens, prompting a second-alarm response and the deployment of FDNY Hazmat resources after compressed natural gas cylinders were discovered on vehicles at the property.

Engine Company 206 was among the first FDNY units to arrive at 48-01 Metropolitan Avenue in Queens, New York, shortly after the initial call was received around 6 p.m. on September 14, 2026. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and multiple trucks burning near the one-story warehouse.

As fire extended into the building, the incident was upgraded to a second alarm. A total of 41 FDNY and EMS units, with approximately 141 personnel, responded to the scene.

Firefighters placed five handlines and two tower ladders into operation to knock down the main body of fire and address remaining pockets of fire in the trucks and trailers. Hazmat personnel were requested after compressed natural gas cylinders were found on several of the vehicles.

Crews searched the commercial building, with no occupants reported inside. No injuries were reported during the operation.

The fire was placed under control at approximately 7:07 p.m., about an hour after the initial call. FDNY fire marshals are investigating the cause.
