WINDHAM CENTER, Conn. — The Windham Center Fire Department announced at 10:14 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, that Plains Road is temporarily closed from the town center to House #53 to allow for the safe removal of a hazardous tree. The closure is expected to remain in place until the work is completed, and officials are urging motorists to seek alternate routes to avoid delays.

According to the department, the removal is necessary to ensure public safety, as the tree posed a risk of falling and potentially damaging property or blocking the roadway. Crews are working with local public works teams and utility personnel to ensure a coordinated operation, which may involve temporary traffic control and equipment staged along the road.

Residents in the affected area have been advised to plan ahead for travel disruptions, particularly during peak commuting hours. Emergency services remain on standby to ensure that access is maintained for fire, police, and medical personnel if needed.

Latest Update: As of early afternoon, work was continuing without incident, and no injuries or property damage have been reported. While there has been no official reopening time provided, officials indicated that updates will be shared on the Windham Center Fire Department’s social media channels as soon as the road is cleared and safe for traffic.

This proactive maintenance effort is part of the town’s ongoing initiative to mitigate risks from aging or storm-damaged trees, a concern heightened in recent years by severe weather events in the region.
