September 2, 2025 — For the second time in 10 days, a forest fire was sparked by an unattended campfire.
Shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday, Shelburne Fire and Gorham EMS were dispatched to reports of smoke across the river behind Reflection Pond. Due to the high potential for fire spread, Gorham Fire responded with Mutual Aid.
Crews discovered approximately a 75-by-300-foot area burning along the river near Hogan Road. Hose lines were stretched from both Gorham and Shelburne engines, successfully preventing the fire from spreading beyond the original half-acre burn area.
Investigators determined the fire originated from a campfire that had been left behind and presumed extinguished. Due to extremely dry conditions, these fires have been burning deep into the ground. NH Forest and Lands personnel remained on-site throughout the afternoon and returned today to recheck the area.
Officials note that the affected forest areas are posted “No Camping” and “No Fires.” Residents are urged to report any unauthorized fires by contacting Gorham Police Dispatch at 603-466-3336 so fire personnel can respond quickly.
