September 5, 2025 — At 12:32 p.m. Friday, the COFD responded to a report of an electrical burning odor inside a residence on Long Sands Road. Chief Dana Cullen Jr. (Car 1), Engine 3 under the command of Lt. Doyle, and Squad 1 under the command of Captain Quigley all responded.

Upon arrival, Lt. Doyle spoke with a cleaning person who reported lights not working in parts of the home and a strong burning odor near the bathroom, where the main electrical distribution panel is located. Using a thermal imaging camera, Doyle discovered elevated temperatures on the exterior of the panel.

The main panel and two subpanels were isolated and de-energized. Further inspection revealed two overheated breakers and partial melting of the main breaker. The local utility company and homeowner were notified, and a licensed electrician was called to inspect and repair the issue.

“This situation could have quickly escalated into a devastating fire,” the department said. “Promptly calling 911 after discovering a burning odor was the right decision and should serve as a reminder to all: never ignore this smell. It can indicate a fire that has already started or is about to start. Always evacuate and call 911.”
