Mastic Firefighters Train on Car Fires

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

MASTIC, NY - On Monday, August 19th, the Mastic Fire Department held a department drill at the fire department training facility across from HQ. The members of the department first gathered for a safety briefing prior to the training. This was given by Lt. Ryan Peters and Ex-Chief Steve Quesada.

After the safety briefing, a precautionary line was stretched and a crew assembled in place. This crew would be deployed if there was an emergency type situation, and they needed to assist in putting out the fire. Once all safety items were in place, the firefighters broke off into groups and stretched a line from the department's Mini Pumper 5-12-10. Probationary firefighters were paired with more senior members and the members did a few evolutions simulating a real car fire using live fire. During the drill, members were supervised by the chiefs and officers. After the evolutions, a quick debrief was done to go over what was learned and practiced.

(Author's note): I would like to thank Mastic Fire Department Chiefs Steve Januszkiewicz and Rudy Sunderman for having me.
