Mastic NY- On Monday September 7, 2020 ( Labor Day) at about 1:00 PM the Mastic Fire Department and Mastic Ambulance were activated for an MVA with reported hazard in Front of Ice Cream Cottage on Montauk Highway. Chief of the Mastic Fire Department Rudy Sunderman was in charge of the alarm. He arrived on scene to find a 3-vehicle crash with heavy fuel spill at the busy intersection of Montauk Highway and Herkimer St.
Chief Sunderman requested fire police unit 5-12-80 to respond immediately to the scene for traffic control as cars were still coming down Montauk highway west of the scene. Suffolk County Police were used to block traffic at the Mastic Ambulance building to the East of the scene for protections. Engine 2 and Rescue 10 quickly responded they were advised due to heavy traffic in the area to head up classon behind Mastic Ambulance and come up Sterling Place to Montauk Highway. On arrival crews quickly went to work securing the 3 vehicles involved and placed down heavy amounts of speedy dry to clean up all the fluids. Firefighters had to also remove a vehicle from the intersection and move it off the road.
Mastic Ambulance checked out the occupants of all the vehicles. They transported at least 1 person to a local hospital in unknown condition. The road was closed for about a half hour while Firefighters and ambulance personnel operated.
